TV in the UK is going digital, and the existing analogue TV signal will be switched off transmitter group by transmitter between now and 2012. Switchover means that almost every household will be able to receive digital TV through their aerial giving many people access to a wider choice of channels.
The TV signal from the Mendip transmitter and its 61 local relays (known as a transmitter group) serves Bristol, parts of Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. Switchover happens in two stages to give people the chance to check their equipment. It is important you are ready by stage one.
Anyone with Freeview, Top Up TV or BT Vision will need to re-tune their digital TV or box at both switchover stages.
There are a number of different ways to receive digital television. (via an aerial, satellite, cable or phone line) and both subscription and non-subscription services are available. The postcode checker on the Digital UK website can tell you what services are available where you live.
Look for the 'digital tick'. This identifies television products and services that are designed to keep working after switchover. Remember you don't need to buy a new television for switchover as almost any set can be converted using digtal box.
If you choose to get digital TV through an aerial, and have reception problems even though you are in a current coverage area, you will need to check your existing TV aerial and installation is suitable. Check with your local aerial installer, look for a Registered Digial Installer (RDI) or a member of the Confederation of Aerial Industries (CAI).
If you chose a Freeview service, you may receive Welsh TV services at the top of the channel list when you re-tune at switchover. If so, you will find West TV regional services further down the channel list (likely to be 800s).
